Technology

Cortex has expertise with a wide variety of analytical tools, thereby ensuring that the most
appropriate tools are applied to achieve efficient, effective solutions to all resource planning,
valuation, and ecological analysis projects.

Remsoft Spatial Planning System (RSPS)

Cortex analysts have over 10 years of advanced project experience using Remsoft software to address some of BC's most complicated forestland planning problems. Cortex is registered as a Remsoft Consulting Partner and has provided RSPS courses to professional foresters.

Timber growth, yield and product prediction

Cortex uses VDYP, TIPSY, TASS, SILVAH, and the Forest Projection and Planning System (FPS) for predicting the growth and yield of timber volume and product grades, for BC , PNW, and eastern US tree species. In addition, Cortex has developed growth and yield models for natural tropical forests and teak plantations in Central and South America.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Cortex makes extensive use of the ESRI ArcGIS product suite (ArcView and ArcINFO) in preparing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data in both vector and raster formats. A variety of extensions, such as Spatial Analyst and Arc Hydro, are available as needed to address the specific needs of various analyses. Our consultants are proficient in the Python scripting language and the use of ArcObjects to allow for repeatable and documented processing and to extend the functionality of ArcGIS in cases where suitable existing tools are not available. We also all add value to projects through the use of Internet Mapping and visualization technologies.

Database

Analysts have experience in designing, organizing, storing, managing, and analyzing Relational database management systems (RDBMS). Depending on the data and size of the aspatial and/or spatial datasets Cortex can use standard database applications such as Microsoft Access on up to SQL Server.

Spatially Explicit Landscape Event Simulator (SELES)

SELES is a high-level spatial process modeling system that Cortex staff has successfully applied to species-at-risk recovery planning and cumulative effects assessment analyses. Cortex has contributed to courses in the use of SELES.

Programming languages

Cortex staff has considerable expertise in application development using a variety of development languages and environments, including Microsoft Visual Studio (C#, C++, VB.NET), Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), ArcObjects, Python, Perl, and Pascal.
