Project Description

Some populations of mountain caribou have declined strongly in the last 20 years. The decline of the Klinse-Za (formerly West Moberly) caribou population is of particular concern to the West Moberly First Nations. In conjunction with the BC Government's Caribou Recovery planning process, Wildlife Infometrics Ltd. and Cortex developed an age-based population model for caribou to explore recovery options for this critically small herd. The model demonstrated that sustained long-term predator control effort, combined with short-term caribou population augmentation, is required to rebuild a self-sustaining population over the next 25 years. The results are currently being used to support maternal penning efforts (initiated in 2014) for this population.
