Project Description

Barred Owls are expanding their range, and are known to overlap with and compete with the endangered Northern Spotted Owl for territories and nest sites. Knowledge of Barred Owl habitat characteristics in its recently occupied range is still sparse, so we used occupancy data to develop predictive models of Barred Owl habitat use based on widely available spatial data. The results are used to help identify potential zones of Barred Owl/Northern Spotted Owl conflicts and inform potential management actions to protect vulnerable Spotted Owls. Inferred habitat characteristics are available in extension publications.
