Project Description

Cortex, in collaboration with Gowlland Technologies Ltd. and government research scientists, developed a spatially explicit snag and course woody debris (CWD) projection and management model to investigate best how best to retain CWD in forest ecosystems. By including road network projections, the models can be used to assess the potential long-term consequences different management rules for retaining deadwood stocks in unmanaged and managed stands. The models, which can be calibrated with permanent plot (PP) data, or from field surveys of CWD volumes, have been used to project long-term deadwood supplies post-mountain pine beetle outbreak in the Quesnel timber supply area, and to project CWD distributions under climate change in Swiss National Forests.
