Project Description

Cortex provided a high-level overview for comparing some of the key options available for Cumulative Effects Analysis (CEA) at a regional scale, based on different management objectives and requirements for resources such as data, time, and expertise. Tools considered were ALCES, CREATe, InVEST, and Stella. These tools are diverse in their input requirements and the breadth and depth of their outputs. For each tool we provided: (i) An overview of the tool, including range of application, how the model works, pros/cons, cost, and technical requirements; (ii) the values (e.g., wildlife, hydrology, custom values) and disturbance types (e.g., forestry, mining, hydro power, climate change) supported by the tool ; (iii) data requirements; and (iv) case studies that employed each tool. Project outputs were used by Environment Canada to inform consideration of candidate tools and subsequent discussions around land-use decision making in the Ring of Fire region of Northern Ontario, Canada.
